Villa Russiz: Pinot Bianco Collio DOC
Straw yellow in color; a delicate bouquet of floral/fruity nuances evolving toward bread crust, apples and almonds. On the palate, astounding complexity and balance, superb depth, firm texture.
Villa Russiz: Sauvignon Collio DOC
100% varietal from hillside vineyards on the property, facing south and southeast, and marly terrain. Straw yellow with greenish hues, a very delicate, aromatic nose reminiscent of yellow peppers, melon, bananas; elegant, full and velvety on the palate. Food pairings: Prosciutto, antipasti and fish dishes, especially with sauces
Villa Russiz: Sauvignon Collio “de la Tour” DOC
From a special selection of grapes and older vines on particularly favorable marly soil, right on top of the hill overlooking the winery, with mainly southeastern exposure… Here is a Sauvignon to define the category: a very complex, aromatic, elegant nose of fennel, figs, green gooseberry, yellow pepper, peach, grapefruit and sage, with intriguingly smoky notes that mesh into a palate of layered, melony, licorice-nuanced flavors with a velvety mouthfeel, excellent balance and finesse, sustained by great body and flair. Very good aging potential. Food pairings: antipasti, prosciutto and fish dishes, especially with sauces; also wonderful for sipping on its own as a vino da meditazione.
Villa Russiz: Merlot Collio “Graf de la Tour” DOC
This blockbuster red from 30-year-old, southerly exposed vines is barrique-aged for two years and bottle-aged for approx. 10 months. Released in top vintages and tiny quantities, it is dark ruby in color, with a bouquet of red fruit and jammy, chocolatey cherry introducing the ripe, round, supple, mellow, multi-dimensional palate. Perfect proof of the terroir’s aptitude for Merlot.
Villa La Selva: Selvamaggio IGT
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Selvamaggio’s name refers to the thick woods (“selva” in Italian) that still shelter this pristine territory. Select grapes of great extract and concentration, 12 to 18 monthsí aging in barriques and 8 monthsí bottle age result in a deep ruby gem of ripe, fruity aromas, elegant balsamic and spicy notes, full body and long finish.
Villa La Selva: Felciaia IGT
This pure Sangiovese takes its name from the vineyard it comes from, Felciaia (meaning “fern bed” in Italian, for ferns abound in the area). From choice fruit and small crops, 12 months’ aging in barriques and 6 months’ bottle age fine-tune its intrinsic excellence, yielding a complex red of supple, fruity aromas with hints of spices and a velvety, full, persistent palate.
Villa La Selva: Vin Santo “Vigna del Papa” DOC (desert wine)
From choice Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes, withered, then soft-pressed and barrique-aged for 5 years.
Vernay: Condrieu Terrasses de l’Empire 2008
The wine, limpide, offers a pretty clear yellow dress, to the brilliant reflections. The nose excites intensely with typical flavoring of white fish, apricot, lemon and equal grades of violet, of rose on a bottom mineral and delicately wooded. The purity of the fruit, meet again in the mouth. After a frank attack, the wine evolves on plumpness with always this characteristic minéralité of the wines of this domain. The flavoring of fishing, of apricot and of violet do themselves more excessive and always sustained by a support freshness that gives relief and volume to the body.
Vernay: Chaillées de l’Enfer
The wine has been aged in oak but is marked by a certain angelic pallor, a pure minerality and a simply incredible length. Drink 2011-2015.
Vernay: Côteau de Vernon
“Always on the purity of the fruit, with matter but without excess, far sometimes excessive flavoring of the Condrieu. A very beautiful wine of gastronomy, always to the summit, that well evolved and takes completely his place.”
Vernay: Viognier
Viognier is one of the great grapes of France’s Rhone Valley. It is an extremely aromatic variety redolent of ripe peaches and wild flowers. It is frequently used to add aromatic complexity to blended wines but on its own, delivers a rich, soft wine with high alcohol and deep flavors of honey, peach, apricot and tangerine.
Vernay: Cote Rotie Blonde du Seigneur
Vivid purple. Sexy aromas of cherry-vanilla, sassafras, violet and rose, with a smoky mineral undertone. Open-knit red and dark fruit flavors become firmer and more tannic in the middle but the fruit gains power on the back end and absorbs the hard edges. Suave, sweet and focused wine with strong finishing spiciness and an echo of candied flowers.
Vernay: Cote Rotie Maison Rouge 2006
Inky and brooding, this classic Cote Rotie has a drop of Viognier blended, which lends a floral note to the wealth of blackberry fruit, lilacs and plums. Scorched earth tones in the background add to the intrigue. Dynamite northern Rhone in an excellent vintage, this wine will drink well over the next 12 years.
Vernay: Saint Joseph 2008
One of the few grapes to really be a global success. Syrah combines a meaty core of ripe berry fruit with tones that range from herbal to peppery in a package that tends to be medium bodied with good acidity and softer tannins. With age the wines can gain lovely leathery and black olive notes that make them a great match for savory and gamy dishes.
Vernay: Côtes du Rhône Sainte-Agathe
“Alluring incense, coffee and iron notes lead the way for a core of solid, medium-weight black cherry and currant fruit. A violet twinge checks in on the stylish finish, which also has some surprising grip. Syrah. Drink now through 2010. 500 cases made.”
Vernay: Fleurs de Mai
This is 100% old vine Syrah grown in the Northern Rhone, on the western slopes above the steep hills of Condrieu and, unlike the Mirbaudie, it is barrel aged. In other words a faux Côte Rotie for about half the cost. Georges Vernay decided to plant some Syrah on this site where he had formally had some peach trees. The variety of these peach trees is called Mayflower hence the name of the wine. This is the first vintage of this prestige Syrah from Vernay and we have not had the chance to taste since it landed. We tasted it from barrel only where it was very impressive. As with all of the wines there is very little so the most curious will be the winners.
Vernay: De Mirebaudie
Excellent value 100% Syrah from Vernay’s trusty red stable. Vibrant, fruity and youthful with a generous concentration of supple, brambly fruit, good cedar and sandalwood aromas, and a ripe, rounded, spicy mid-palate. Few Rhone’s in this bracket show such diversity of flavour and its gentle tannin structure will see it develop further over the next few years.
