Toscolo: Chianti DOCG
Brilliant ruby in color, this forward Sangiovese varietal is supple, fruity and flavorful on the palate, with appealing balance and near-unlimited matchability with food. Best savored in its youth with pasta, risotto, first courses in general, red or white meat.
Toscolo: Chianti Classico DOCG
From 95% Sangiovese, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Depth and richness are immediately evident in the full ruby color and ample bouquet. The chewy, abundant fruit, silky texture, good body, balance and extract, make this a very food-friendly red that can be enjoyed both with pasta, risotto and first courses, and with meat-based dishes.
Toscolo: Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG
This Riserva, from 90% Sangiovese, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, achieves further depth, richness and elegance from its élevage, partly in large oak casks for 24 months, and partly in barrique for 6 months, previous to 3 months in the bottle. Top vintages improve for well over a decade.
Terra dei Re: Aglianico del Vulture “Vultu” DOC
Named after the extinct volcano, mount Vulture, it is also 100% Aglianico, from a maximum crop yield of 2.8 tons per acre (7 tons per hectare), harvested around the end of October/early November.
Terra dei Re: Aglianico del Vulture “Divinus” DOC
The pinnacle wine. 100% Aglianico varietal, the tiny crops (just half a kilo per vine, i.e. barely over 1 pound!), harvested in early to mid-November, are characterized by amazing concentration and extract.
Terra dei Re: Pacus IGT
Red blend with majority percentage (85%) of Aglianico del Vulture Garnet red in color; bouquet of cherries, blackcurrant and sweet spice; sumptuous and silky on the palate, with notes of raspberries, wild strawberries, dried pennyroyal, and rich, buttery finish.
Tor: Cuvée Torchiana
At first sight this wine shows a brilliant green/gold color. On the nose there is hazelnut, cream, sweet spices and Meyer lemon. On the palate you find extreme richness and complete front to back/side to side palate coating richness. Honeysuckle, nectarines and an almost crystallized focus from the acidity. Extremely long and lingering on the finish, this wine promises to not only age well but get better for at least another 3-5 years.
Tor: Cuvée Susan
Dark garnet red to the core with no lightening at the rim. This has a wonderful saturation of color. On the nose there is a dusty graphite quality, crushed blackberries, mulled spices and sweet oak. On the palate the entry is simply seamless. The mid palate is full and rich and coats the palate from side to side. Roasted meats, spices- cloves and spearmint trail off to a long and supple finish that shows no trace of bitterness or angularity but is loaded with sweetness and silk. Seamless is probably the word that would best be used to describe this wine. A great example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
Tor: Cabernet Sauvignon Cimarossa
The nose on this shows the classic Howell Mountain blueberry profile along with a tremendous floral component of roses and violets along with grilled meats. On the palate it has wonderfully ripe and round tannin, especially for a Howell Mountain Cabernet. Hints of spearmint, cloves, wet earth along with a great mineral profile serves to focus the flavors further. Perhaps the most approachable Howell Mountain Cabernet we have made to date, it will need three years in the cellar (as opposed to the five that is normally needed to show their best). However, a day in a decanter will certainly help show a glimpse of the wine’s very bright future.
Tor: Cabernet Sauvignon Mast Vineyard
On the nose there is big, rich blackberry followed by notes of tar and currants. On the palate this wine is sneaky with a long finish. It begins with a very rich, sweet entry and though packed with tannin, it never shows those tannins – absolutely palate coating with venison, smoke, tobacco and cloves. The very ripe, sweet tannins allow the wine to truly coat the palate with richness. Extremely well balanced, this wine should age gracefully for years to come. If consumed in the next couple of years, I highly recommend a few hours (or better yet, one day) of decanting.
Tor: Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon
Yet again, To-Kalon is unique among the wine. There is something about the profile of this wine that makes it easy to pick out. The nose shows raspberry, blackberry, smoked meats and a minty quality that is unique to To-Kalon. On the palate it is very rich yet completely balanced. No one quality sticks out. The tannin, acid and wood behave as a single unit allowing the wonderful classic graphite, licorice and herbs profile to shine. Balance is the hallmark of this wine. This is a wine that will drink well young and will with any luck drink well its entire life, never shutting down.
Tor Rock: Granache
Aromatically the 2007 Hommage Allan is turning more and more toward Châteauneuf as it evolves in bottle. It has beautiful earthy, soil driven aromas along with lite spice and a bit of dried lavender. On the palate it is medium weight with tremendous purity and focus. The predominant flavors are a mix of roasted meats, damp earth, blackberry and a little sweet smoke. Though certainly drinkable now, this wine shows all the signs of being one to tuck a few bottles away of and allow it to develop the more subtle/wonderful secondary flavors of age.
Tor Rock: Syrah Judge Vineyard
Cracked black pepper fresh out of a pepper mill is the most defining quality on the aromatics of this wine. Road tar, roasted meats and charcoal smoke are also found on the nose of this Syrah. On the palate there is full weight with tremendous density and length across the entire palate. Along with the richness and density are the acids from the cool climate vineyard site that hold the fruit in check and provide precision and definition. Ripe cherry, boysenberry and even hints of Provence herbs are evident on the palate. A classic cool climate California Syrah. More like Hermitage to the Hommage Allans’ Cote Rotie.
Tor Rock: Syrah Hudson Vineyard
Massively rich/forceful nose of meats, oak, earth, spice and a hint of black cherry and chocolate. On the palate this wine just takes over. To call it dense is really not fair. Dry aged beef, smoking coals, blackberry, bacon fat and sweet oak show themselves on the palate along with masses of sweet/ripe tannins. The finish on this just does not quit and tapers off after a minute or so a sweet dove tail of sweetness.
