Foxes Island: Chardonnay

A full-bodied, complex and creamy Chardonnay produced exclusively from fruit grown on the two estate vineyards.  The hand picked bunches are chilled, pressed and the resultant juice lightly settled before fermentation in tight grained French oak using indigenous yeasts and regular battonage.  Following 11 months of maturation the wine from selected barrels is gravity racked to a blending vessel, gently fined and bottled.  A supple and fragrant Chardonnay which is ready to enjoy in its youth with fine food, or to be cellared with confidence over three to four years.

Foxes Island: Sauvignon Blanc

The fruit for this wine is grown on the very dry and stony site perched on the northern edge of an old river terrace at our “Old Ford Rd Vineyard” in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough. These low yielding vines enjoy the long, warm summer days with refreshingly cool nights that provide ideal conditions to fully ripen the fruit.  The focused and intense natural fruit flavours are captured during the cool fermentation and enhanced by six months aging on the yeast lees to ensure a luscious wine of considerable depth.  This expression of Marlborough is to be enjoyed with great food, or if you prefer some bottle development, the wine has the structure to age for two to three years.

Foxes Island: Pinot Noir

The fruit for this wine is grown on the two estate vineyards.  Following de-stemming and an extended cold maceration the must is warmed and fermented in small open topped oak and stainless vessels. At dryness the wine is drained and the skins gently pressed following which the individual batches are matured in tight grained French oak barriques for 14 months. The final barrel selection is blended, egg white fined, and bottled unfiltered .  Dominating the aromatics is a characteristic spiciness. The palate is generous and supple, yet with sufficient spine to encourage medium term cellaring.

Full body, delightful pineapple, cream, honey and mango aromas, structured and cellar-worthy. The wine’s name, “I Sistri” (“Sistra”: ancient musical instruments), was borrowed from an 1891 poem by one of Italy’s classic writers, Giovanni Pascoli (see image 2). At the time, Pascoli was living not far from the Poggiali estates, writing some of his finest lines on nature and the Tuscan countryside. The same poem has inspired the Pinot Noir from Castello di Farnetella, Nero di Nubi…
