Einaudi: Dolcetto di Dogliani DOC

Dogliani is a historic Dolcetto terroir; in fact, the variety is thought to have originated here, and to attain its greatest finesse on this land. This Dogliani supremacy was officially recognized in July 2005 by means of Italy’s top denomination, the DOCG. The former DOC of Dolcetto di Dogliani Superiore (going back to 6/26/1974) has become Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita as of the 2005 vintage. In future, the wine may be called either Dolcetto di Dogliani Superiore DOCG or, more simply, Dogliani DOCG. Einaudi have chosen to bottle their regular 2005 Dolcetto di Dogliani as Dolcetto di Dogliani DOC. (The crus, on the other hand, will be Dogliani Vigna Tecc DOCG 2005 and Dogliani I Filari DOCG 2005 - see corresponding fact sheets.) This particular Dolcetto di Dogliani is grown on marly-calcareous-clayey soil, SE/S/SW exposure, Guyot-trained vines. It can be enjoyed quite young and is characterized by ruby red color with purple reflections, fruity aromas, good body, intense, fresh berry and underbrush flavors with an almond nuance on the finish. Wonderfully versatile with food.

Einaudi: Barolo “Costa Grimaldi” DOCG (Single-vineyard)

Choice selection of the finest Nebbiolo grapes from the Costa Grimaldi vineyard (marly-calcareous soil, southeastern exposure, 1,000 feet a.s.l.; vines planted in 1962) within the Terlo cru. (Only about 20% of the grapes are cherry-picked for this wine.) Their intrinsic excellence is complemented by élevage, 20% in French Allier barriques, the rest in 18 and 30-hl. Slavonian oak barrels. The resulting wine is garnet red with orange reflections; intense, persistent bouquet; full-bodied, austere and velvety on the palate, with long finish of goudron and spice. In time, the wine is fine-tuned to greater and greater complexity, acquiring notes of truffles and leather. Cellar life is 25-30 years on the finest vintages.
